We have created an alphabet that references Francophone cultures in a playful, visual, and tactile way—one that appeals to both adults and children by sparking their imagination. It is an alphabet book featuring monsters and creatures drawn from Francophone cultures in the broadest sense. Each creature is drawn based on legendary tales describing its appearance, and in a pose that forms the shape of its initial letter. Together, these letters make up an alphabet book that we have called the Alphabestiaire de la francophonie. These letters form the capital letters of Hérissant·e.

    • Hérissant·e is a typeface designed by Eugénie Bidaut with the assistance of Capucine Colomès and Garance Hebrard, and in collaboration with the Atelier Baudelaire during the “Typographier la francophonie” residency, co-organized by the Cité internationale de la langue française, the National Center for Visual Arts, and the Atelier du livre d’art et de l’estampe at the Imprimerie nationale.
